You often steal your family's time when you work long hours and weekends as a contractor. Dan reminds you that you have to work hard for your business, but you can't handle everything alone—reach out and get coaching from someone who has been through it, and protect your time with your family.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • Your business can be stealing time away from your family.
  • Seeking out coaching help instead of trying to solve everything yourself
  • Making sure your family life doesn't suffer because of your business

The guys answer your questions about investing in paid coaching, restarting your business after losing money, and giving clients a rough estimate of the project during the prequalification phase.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • Question 1: When is the right time to invest in paid coaching?
    • Getting paid coaching doesn't have to wait until you're struggling in your business
    • In order for coaching to work, it must be put into practice.
    • Coaching is more about your intent to implement things.

  • Question 2: Having failed two projects worth more than $40k as a business owner, I'm losing motivation. Could you give me advice on getting back out there?
    • Take the time to analyze the mistakes, adapt, and then move
    • Your success depends on what you have learned and what you will do with this new knowledge.
    • Anyone who has been successful in anything has learned some hard lessons and fought through adversity to get there.

  • Question 3: I own a window door company, but I have trouble giving rough estimates to clients. Can you provide me with any recommendations?
    • Join Colosseum Sales Training to improve your sales skills
    • You can expect to pay between $100k to $125k for a high-quality window or $35k to $40k for a basic window.
    • Listen to the clients, deliver what they want, and you'll stand out

Tom and Dan answer your questions about the impact of the current state of the economy on contractors, how contractors can thrive and survive during this time, and what they can do to compete with large companies. They also share the strongest attribute, which helped them to survive and thrive during the past recessions.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • Question1: What is your forecast for the bottom of the economy to fall out, forcing subs and generals to scramble?
    • The past few years (except the pandemic phase) have been easy to make money in business—If you weren't making money during those years, then you're not doing your job well.
    • Develop the habits of what a successful business owner does with their time, energy, and focus.
    • Ups and downs in the economy are natural. It's going to happen. Control what you can control.
    • Choose not to participate in the recession.

  • Question 2: In a market where the two largest companies are reducing prices by 30 to 40% below the market rate, how can you compete?
    • Discounting products or services doesn't mean they're undermining product prices or services.
    • Build your brand. Build value. Know what your customers really want—big companies can be tone-deaf because they are too busy steamrolling their systems.
    • Differentiate yourself with your unique selling proposition—how you pre-plan a job, how you show up, and follow up on things with people and yourself.

After events and workshops, there's a lot of hype, positive energy, and people are excited about the new information they gained — but this is where it goes wrong. Unfortunately, most people leave events with a flood of information and either overwhelm their employees or family members or suffer mental exhaustion.

Dan talks about your next steps after attending events and seminars and how to prevent yourself from crashing.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • Scenarios with most people after attending events:
    • Constantly bombarding others with information
    • Become mentally exhausted and tired
    • Return to normal life as they get back
  • What to do after attending events to take advantage of the knowledge, solutions, and tools you learned

Taking questions from Mira and Dan Wilson, Tom and Dan discuss feeling uneasy while charging high prices as a newbie with limited experience and what contractors can do to maintain and care for their mental health.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • Question 1: As a newcomer to the contracting industry with limited experience, I feel apprehensive about charging "high prices." What advice can you give me?
    • High or low price is subjective to the consumer.
    • Charge whatever the formulas tell you, no matter how high or low you think it is.
    • As a newbie, you're more hungrier than others, so you need to take advantage of that.
    • Understanding why the client wants to do the project is what makes you valuable.

  • Question 2: I believe contractors are overlooking mental health. What do you recommend for clearing your head and resetting your brain?
    • Playing golf, reading philosophy, and meditating can be great mental health support methods.
    • Be clear on the controlling and controllable things in your day and life.

Have you ever had a tendency to get carried away with strong emotions or even rage when communicating with a client? By reacting with your emotions or pouncing on the clients before they can even get their words out, you can end up in an argument instead of a discussion. The most important thing is to listen rather than pounce, and Dan discusses the importance of this.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • Taking a deep breath and being mindful of your communication style before replying
  • About the 5-4-3-2-1 communication theory and its advantages
  • Communication examples where pauses were taken and not pounced upon

  • Wasting money on inefficiencies and callbacks is never a good idea

"I'm literally the poster child for what The Contractor Fight produces when followed. And everything I know and I'm implementing is basically the result of the fight." — Aaron Harshaw.

Aaron is a former pastor and now a general contractor in a small town in Kansas. He started his company, Harshaw Home Renovators, on September 1st, 2018. During their conversation, Tom and Aaron discussed Aaron's business, some of the lessons he has learned, and what it means to love and support your team.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • The things Aaron learned from the ministry and applied to his business — Active listening and helping people fix things that they can't do on their own
  • Aaron's way of showing his team that they're loved and valued
  • Why Aaron has niched his company to specialize in kitchens, baths, basements, and custom decks
  • The biggest business mistake he made in his career — accepting $108,000 for a project that was supposed to cost $275,000

In the first episode of this two-part series, Tom and Steve discussed the first five mistakes that contractors make when they try to sell. Today, the two discuss the rest of them so you can continue learning how to make a sale and avoid costly, no-return mistakes.

In this episode, they discuss…

  • Some common mistakes most contractors make when selling:
  1. Focusing on your reasons for people to buy instead of theirs
  2. No or inconsistent sales training
  3. Defending your higher price
  4. Going too technical in the process
  5. Pouncing — If you're pouncing, you're losing; pouncing is like fighting
